Sushi, Sashimi and Worms, Oh My!

Sushi, Sashimi and Worms, Oh My! What was once a trendy food a short time ago is now very mainstream. In restaurants in cities all over America, sushi and its cousin sashimi can be found in Chinese buffets and Japanese sushi bars everywhere. You can even find it in your local supermarket. The raw seafood used in these foods may contain parasitic worms that can cause relatively mild to severe infections in humans. Anisakis simplex is the most likely offender when it comes to parasitic infections from these now common foods. Anisakis is a marine roundworm that can be found in over 200 species of fish, eel and octopus. When you eat raw seafood contaminated with this roundworm, you are ingesting live larval forms of the parasite. From as soon as 1 hour to 2 weeks after eating the sushi, the symptoms may begin. The worms typically attached themselves to the stomach where vomiting and abdominal pain will ensue. More severe symptoms may be abdominal pains resembling appendicitis and rarely bowel obstructions.. Typically in this country people discover they have this parasite when they feel a tickling sensation in the throat and actually cough up the worm. This parasite rarely achieves maturity in the human host and eventually dies in a few weeks. The dead worms however stimulate an inflammatory response which can cause allergic type symptoms. There is no antibiotic or other pill to take for treating Anisakis. Removing the worm surgically may be the only way to alleviate pain in very severe cases. The good news is that this food borne illness is quite rare in the United States with only approximately 10 cases reported annually, though it is speculated that many mild cases are not reported. How do you prevent getting this potentially painful parasite? The Food and Drug Administration recommends that all seafood intended for raw consumption be either blast frozen (-35ºC) for at least 15 hours or regularly frozen for 7 days which will kill the parasite. Go to reputable restaurants that surely follow these health and safety guidelines. Don’t prepare your own sushi from fish you caught yourself. This disease should be considered if you’ve had recently eaten sushi or sashimi and have symptoms of an allergic reaction with abdominal pain. As more and more people patronize restaurants that serve sushi, it is expected that the levels of Anisakiasis will increase in this country.…

A Quick Guide to Understanding the Health Benefits of Sushi

A Quick Guide to Understanding the Health Benefits of Sushi Sushi lovers agree that sushi is a tasty food. The combination of rice, seafood and vegetables make the concoction even more enjoyable since the combination of foods satisfies almost every food group. Its decadent taste is only one reason why sushi is good to eat. Another reason to consume sushi is because sushi is also healthy option when consumed in the correct fashion. Sushi is a healthy option due to the manner in which it is prepared. Since sushi components are uncooked, there are not any fatty additives. Since there aren’t any fats or agents added to sushi during preparation, the sushi also retains more of its healthy components instead of being cooked out. Moreover, the raw fish in sushi also contains high amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are responsible for fighting heart disease and lowering cholesterol. HDL cholesterol, also known as high density lipoproteins, is the healthy cholesterol. When the HDL is raised, the LDL cholesterol or low-density lipoproteins is lowered. LDL is the unhealthy cholesterol which contributes to atherosclerosis and artery blockage. Omega 3 fatty acids also increase circulation. Circulation may seem insignificant, but circulation is a vital part of diabetes. Although there are few studies that corroborate this evidence, doctors still theorize that the omega 3 fatty acids in sushi benefit those suffering from diabetes patients with poor circulation. Omega 3 fatty acids also reduce cardiovascular diseases since the acids breakdown cholesterol and improve artery function. The omega 3 fatty acids found in the fish have also be correlated to preventing diseases and treating symptoms in depression, schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder, dementia in Alzheimer’s Disease, and joint stiffness and pain associated with arthritis. Seaweed has all the properties of a super food. Seaweed contains a plethora of minerals, vitamins, riboflavin, iron and calcium. Unlike land grown vegetables, seaweed is extremely potent containing even more beneficial agents than that of traditional vegetables. Some people do not enjoy the taste of raw food or are concerned when eating raw foods like fish. Studies have shown that consuming raw fish does increase your risk of being exposed to parasites, bacteria and viruses. Also, larger fish have higher mercury levels. While sushi lovers should take heed of these issues, eating sushi occasionally instead of as a staple meal. Nonetheless, if you want to reap the health benefits of consuming sushi without being overly concerned with bacteria and parasites, opt for chef prepared sushi instead of store bought or self-prepared sushi. Sushi chefs are professionally trained in handling and preparing sushi at the proper temperature. Also, don’t skip the wasabi when eating your sushi. Wasabi has antimicrobial properties and utilizing it keeps unhealthy bacteria at bay. In either event, eating sushi is far more beneficial than harmful. Sushi’s raw state retains more advantageous components. Omega 3 fatty acids are among the most helpful agents found in the fish in sushi. Omega 3 fatty acids increase healthy cholesterol, prevents heart disease, increase circulation in diabetes patients, and even treats life crippling diseases like bi-polar disorder and arthritis.…

With preparation and planning healthy food can be just as inexpensive as food that is unhealthy. Many families have moved away from cooking at home and packing left overs to take with them, which is one reason why they believe healthy food is more expensive. Let’s break down a healthy meal price versus an unhealthy meal price and just why healthy always wins. Hamburger Helper is very popular amongst families on a budget because it is cheap and fast. The American-based Food Network listed Hamburger Helper as number three in its list of the top five fad foods of the 1970s and it is still popular today. We know cheap and fast is not always good, especially in regards to hamburger helper. It lacks the nutrients that an adult and child needs. The Origin of Sushi

The Origin of Sushi Considering that sushi goes against one of the primary rules of preparing food that many people were brought up with (cooking meat), it is impressive how widely spread it has become. Due to the use of fresh ingredients and the interesting ways the dishes are created, it allows the person eating it the opportunity to actually enjoy the subtle flavors found in the ingredients instead of needing to cover them up with sauces. Sushi has been around for hundreds of years and actually originated from a means of preserving fish with fermenting rice. When this method of preservation was first used, the rice was discarded and fish eaten separately. Over time process evolved in various ways, including the introduction of vinegar, but it was with a desire for a quick meal that the rice and fish began being consumed together. A sharp vendor decided that by pairing the fish with the rice, a dish is created allowing for an on the go meal using one’s hands. For those who find chopsticks a puzzle impossible to overcome, you will happy to know that eating sushi with one’s hands is still considered acceptable. In addition, sushi as a good on the go meal is still possible in Japan at the various convenience stores or conbini out of a disposable sushi set. Since sushi’s creation in its modern form it has undergone many changes and variations. The common sushi to see on a menu in one part of the world might not be the same as another, but nigiri (commonly referred to as simply sushi) and maki (sushi roll) are very common. In addition, though not technically a type of sushi because of the lack of sushi rice, sashimi offers one of the simplest meals consisting primarily of sliced raw fish on a garnish of some sort. So it might be very different from the types of food that many people were brought up on, but it is clearly becoming very popular around the world. With this information in hand you have something to think about while eating any of the delicious types of sushi available off of a sushi set or right off the counter of a sushi bar.…

Sushi Cat – Flash Game Review

Sushi Cat – Flash Game Review Sushi Cat is a delightfully fun game in which a cat is trying to open an elevator door… but he just is not big enough! So, using its own initiative, and by complete chance, he gets to work in the sushi store that he stumbles across. It’s your job to make sure he is big enough! The objective is simple, simply drop the cat down, and try and place it where it will collect and eat as much food as possible, however, you must take into account the multipliers at the bottom of the screen. You will be awarded points for eating the food; the total points will then be multiplied by the number of what container you land in. So, taking all of this into account, you must select carefully where to drop him. The main interface looks very puzzling, however, once you become familiar with it you soon realize there is not anything majorly complicated. The long stretched out stomach of the cat on the far left will display what food you have eaten so far, you must reach the top in order to complete your objective for each level. The number of cats remaining to drop is shown on the top left of the main screen. At the bottom, the containers indicate the multipliers, and to the right of this indicates what number level you are currently on. Finally, above the level indicator is the conveyor-belt, containing the food left that has not yet been collected. Naturally the levels will become increasingly harder, you will be given less cats to complete the level, and more obstacles that your cat will bounce off will eventually be introduced. Making it very difficult to determine what way your cat will bounce. This means the game is based quite substantially on luck, which may be off putting. Once a level has been completed, a score screen will come up, quickly totalling your score, displaying the points you have earned and what they have increased to taking into account the multiplier. This level score is then added on top of your total score. To summarize, Sushi Cat is a simple and unique game. It is available to all ages and intellects, and I can imagine the idea of a fat cat eating as much food as possible will be appealing to a younger generation. All in all, it should not be dismissed before you have even begun to play it.…

New Generation Sushi – An Offshoot of Sushi For Western Culture

New Generation Sushi – An Offshoot of Sushi For Western Culture The increasing popularity of sushi in North America has given the birth to the creation of New generation sushi, normally known as gen sushi. It is created to suit the Western palate, and is rarely found in Japan, as it appeals to the western tastes. People who fear to eat the standard raw fish sushi, can experience this type with a variety of vegetables, scallops and tuna. However, a few things are necessary to be kept in mind before you try it. Gen sushi is a spin off form of the traditional Japanese sushi, for those who fear to eat raw fish. This style of food has forms like the Boston rolls and the California maki rolls. It is a great option for those people who do not wish to try the Japanese fish dishes like sashimi or nigiri. It should be eaten in a specific way, whether you are trying the gen sushi or feasting on traditional Japanese sushi. Japanese culture has polite methods of eating sushi which are also observed in the western restaurants as well. As an example, you should be careful not to pass sushi from your chopsticks to another person’s, if you are sharing it with friends and family. It is considered as extremely inconsiderate and unmannerly, as this custom is used in funerals in Japan and is reserved for handling cremated bones. Also, you should be careful to place your chopsticks on your plate’s edge or on the chopstick holders. Do not place your chopsticks with their base touching the table, and the rest on the plate. You should also be careful as to the amount of soy sauce you take, as it should be not more than you need, so it does not get wasted. It is considered bad to waste food in Japanese culture, so you should not leave any sushi or food behind on your plate. Otherwise, it will be considered as an insult to the chef. You can generally find gen sushi at a specialty sushi store, but many grocery stores and Asian markets do have it in stock as there is a growing demand for it now. You can also try it at a restaurant, as many chain restaurants are now open that are special only for this style of sushi. Also, some American options will also be found at a traditional sushi restaurant, though that variety would be less than at a gen sushi restaurant.…
